Paris – 28.05.2026: Raphaël Glucksmann, European MP and head of the political movement Place publique, announced that he will decide by the end of summer on his possible candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. In an interview with TF1, Glucksmann stated that he wants to use the next three months for “traveling around the country and proposing a new patriotic pact.”
He emphasized that he does not aim to be just another voice in the democratic-left spectrum, but wants to unite his political family and promote a single candidacy of the non-Mélenchonist left. This strategy is a major challenge due to the fragmentation of left-wing parties in France. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the left-wing movement La France insoumise, is currently leading in the polls. Furthermore, especially former socialist comrades remain skeptical about Glucksmann’s plans.
A recently published internal memorandum, which outlined the conscious isolation of working-class and youth voters, caused additional controversy. Glucksmann himself distanced himself from this approach and seeks to appeal to a broad base of left-wing and centrist voters. The main message is a consistent national identity that distances itself from both radical left and right narratives.
His political platform focuses on strengthening public education, protecting the climate, reindustrializing France, and reforming immigration policy. Funding is planned through increased taxation of the wealthy, whereas the two percent corporate capital tax proposed by economists like Gabriel Zucman is rejected by him. Glucksmann bets on pragmatism and realism in political implementation.
The goal is to mobilize a broad coalition of Greens, Socialists, and Centrists. Former leader of the Socialist Party Olivier Faure has so far not openly supported Glucksmann, which will be an important signal before the meeting on June 13. This meeting is considered a test of Glucksmann’s ability to unite the fragmented left for the 2027 presidential election.
Glucksmann clearly stated that he does not seek a joint candidacy project with Jean-Luc Mélenchon and La France insoumise due to fundamental differences on Europe, defense, geopolitics, and the energy balance.
His future decision will take place during a period of strong fragmentation of the left-wing political environment in France, due to which a united and effective opposition to the current government and right-wing political forces is not yet visible. Glucksmann’s efforts could play a decisive role in whether the left manages to regain influence in the 2027 elections or continues to lose significance.
