Russian drone hits residential building in Romania – two injured and international condemnation

Galați – 29.05.2026: On the night before Friday, an incident with wide-ranging consequences occurred in the southeastern Romanian city of Galați. A Russian drone, which penetrated Romanian airspace during the attack on Ukraine, crashed on the roof of a ten-story residential building. The explosion caused a fire on the top floor of the building. Two residents – a 51-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy – sustained minor injuries and received medical assistance on site. The rest of the residents managed to leave the building, so there were no other casualties.

The Romanian Minister of Defense stated that the drone entered the country’s airspace during the Russian attack on civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine near the border with Romania. The military deployed two F-16 fighters and a helicopter for monitoring. The decision not to shoot down the drone was made to avoid risks to the population.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. Romania informed its allies and the NATO Secretary General about the situation and called for enhanced air defense. The Russian ambassador was also summoned to express the government’s concern.

NATO and the European Union reacted with harsh criticism and called the attack a serious violation of European airspace. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Russia “crossed another red line.” This incident heightens concerns about the growing threat of Russian drone attacks in the region.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, 47 drone wreckages have already been found on Romanian territory, but this is the first case in which a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle directly hit a residential building and injured civilians. Romanian authorities announced their intention to strengthen security measures and expand cooperation with international partners to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Experts consider this event a challenge for NATO, as it highlights the importance of effective air defense against asymmetric threats. A thorough investigation is planned to find out how the drone was able to penetrate the airspace and where security gaps exist. The results will form the basis for further protective measures.

The international community faces the task of responding adequately to such cases without endangering the safety of the civilian population. The events in Galați underline how important cooperation among NATO member countries is for ensuring regional stability and preventing escalation.
