Roland-Garros: João Fonseca eliminiert Novak Djokovic aus dem Turnier nach dramatischem Fünf-Satz-Krimi

Paris – 29 May 2026: One of the tournament’s most spectacular clashes unfolded on Friday at the historic Philippe-Chatrier Court during this Roland-Garros event. Nineteen-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca defeated 38-year-old Serbian and 24-time Grand Slam champion, living tennis legend Novak Djokovic, in an almost five-hour marathon match, 4–6, 4–6, 6–3, 7–5, 7–5. The victory was not only a decisive win for Fonseca but was recorded as one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Djokovic showed dominance early, making the most of his clay-court experience. He took the first two sets 6–4, 6–4, but the young opponent never backed down. Fonseca mounted an impressive comeback, adjusting his game, increasing aggression, and skillfully using a variety of strokes. He repeatedly disrupted Djokovic’s rhythm and established his own pace.

The fourth set, in particular, featured tense and nerve-wracking phases, during which Fonseca claimed his first set. In the deciding fifth set, he took the lead at 5–5. He secured a decisive break with three consecutive service aces and then earned match point with additional service aces. After the final point, he celebrated with cheering fans, expressing overflowing joy at the biggest success of his young playing career.

In a media interview, Fonseca emphasized his respect for Djokovic, who he has long admired: “I tried to stay calm and enjoy every point. Playing against someone like Novak was truly unbelievable.” Djokovic showed sportsmanship and praised his opponent’s performance: “João was the better player from the third set on and deserved the victory. I wish him success in the rest of the tournament.”

This unexpected exit cost Djokovic the chance to claim a 25th Grand Slam title. For João Fonseca, however, reaching the last 16 opened a promising prospect for establishing himself as one of the rising talents in world tennis. This young Brazilian talent will be seriously considered a contender for future tournaments not only on clay but on other surfaces as well.

The tennis world is looking forward to the next round at Roland-Garros, where Fonseca will face a strong opponent. The grit and mental strength he displayed against Djokovic proved he can compete at the highest level. The experience of battling one of the greatest players in tennis history will further bolster his confidence.
