Autonomy of Corsica: Discussion of Constitutional Status Reform in Parliamentary Committee

Paris – 16.06.2026: The French Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs is today reviewing a bill that aims to grant Corsica an expanded status of autonomy within the Republic. This step continues previous discussions and political initiatives aimed at addressing the specific needs and cultural identity of the island.

The bill foresees that Corsica will gain the ability to adapt certain laws and regulations according to local conditions. This will give the island greater flexibility in implementing national legislation to better respond to unique challenges and characteristics. However, the exact format of these powers is the subject of intense debate in the political arena.

Gilles Simeoni, President of the Executive Council of Corsica, has repeatedly expressed support for the bill. He emphasized that rejection of the text by parliament would mean “a form of denial of the democratic expression of the Corsicans.” Simeoni expressed hope for a “positive response” and assured that if rejected, the struggle will continue.

Political support for the bill, however, is mixed. Within the government coalition, there are differing opinions regarding the scope and control of future powers. Some parties, such as Renaissance, Horizons, and MoDem, support the project, while others, notably The Republicans, are skeptical about the proposed changes. The Socialist Party, as well as some Greens and deputies from overseas territories, also expressed support, whereas La France Insoumise abstained from voting.

The bill has already been approved by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs with 20 votes in favor, 6 against, and 6 abstentions. This step is considered preparation for debates in the plenary of the National Assembly, scheduled for June 16, 2026. If the project is adopted by parliament, Senate approval remains, which is expected in September or October. After that, the bill must receive the approval of three-fifths of parliamentarians in Congress to come into effect.

Discussions about Corsican autonomy are not new. Already in March 2025, the Senate rejected a report on the future institutional development of the island due to deep political disagreements. These disagreements reflect the complexity and sensitivity of the issue, which concerns both national and regional interests.

Today’s session of the parliamentary committee is therefore considered decisive for the further progress of the legislative process. The results of these discussions could significantly determine whether Corsica will soon receive an expanded status of autonomy within the French Republic.

For additional information and current updates on the development of this legislative process, it is recommended to follow the official announcements of the French National Assembly, as well as press conferences of the Executive Council of Corsica.
