Ardash strengthens sanctions for using a mobile phone while driving

Priva — 06/02/2026: From June 1, 2026, the French region of Ardèche will implement immediate suspension of driving licenses for drivers caught talking on the phone while driving. This measure aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents.

The decision was made by Benoît Trevisani, Prefect of Ardèche, following a series of serious traffic accidents in 2026. By the end of May, 19 road traffic deaths had been recorded in the department, equaling the total number from the previous year. A particularly tragic case occurred in Vernoux-les-Annonay, where five young people died.

The new rule stipulates that drivers caught holding a phone while driving risk immediate administrative suspension of their driving licenses. This measure complements existing fines, which include a €135 fine and deduction of three points from the driving license. The license suspension period can last up to six months, depending on the severity of the violation and after review by the prefect.

With this decision, Ardèche joins several other French departments that have introduced similar measures. Previously, Landes, Pas-de-Calais, Charente-Maritime and Lot-et-Garonne have already implemented immediate suspension of driving licenses for mobile phone use while driving.

Authorities emphasize that using mobile phones while driving is a significant risk factor on the roads. According to the French safety service, reading a message while driving increases the risk of accidents 23 times, as drivers typically take their eyes off the road for about five seconds.

The implementation of this measure in Ardèche is part of a broader plan to improve road safety in the department. In addition to tightening sanctions, controls will be strengthened and awareness campaigns conducted to raise drivers’ awareness about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.

The effectiveness of these enhanced sanctions will be closely monitored in the coming months to determine whether they lead to a reduction in traffic accidents and related deaths. Authorities hope that these measures will significantly reduce the number of accidents in Ardèche.
