Marc Bloch and his wife Simone Vidal were admitted to the Pantheon.

Paris – 23.06.2026: Marc Bloch, the prominent 20th-century historian and Resistance hero, was today solemnly inducted into the Pantheon along with his wife Simone Vidal. This honor recognizes both his intellectual legacy and his courageous resistance against Nazism.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, including “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite,” significantly influenced the development of historical science.

During World War II, Bloch actively participated in the Resistance against the German occupation. In March 1944, he was arrested by the Vichy police and brutally tortured in prison. Despite severe abuse, he did not divulge any information. On June 16, 1944, he was executed by the Gestapo.

On the occasion of his induction into the Pantheon, a documentary titled “Marc Bloch, au nom de la France” was released. This film, written and directed by Hugh Nancy, highlights the exceptional life and dedication of Marc Bloch and his wife Simone Vidal. The film uses rich archival materials, including photographs, diaries, and manuscripts, to tell the story of this outstanding couple.

Marc Bloch’s family initially expressed concern about possible political exploitation of his legacy. They emphasized the importance of exclusively civil recognition and wished for broad involvement of the academic community in the ceremony. These wishes were taken into account, and the event proceeded without the participation of the right-wing Rassemblement National.

The induction of Marc Bloch and Simone Vidal into the Pantheon is a significant event that honors the values of the Republic and reminds us of the struggle for freedom and justice. It underscores the importance of remembering history and recognizing those who fought for democracy.

For those interested, the exhibition “Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire” will be open at the Pantheon from June 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027. The exhibition offers an in-depth look at the life and work of this outstanding historian.

Today’s ceremony was led by President Emmanuel Macron, who emphasized Marc Bloch’s significance for French history and culture. He stressed that Bloch is worthy of honor for his work, teachings, and courage.

The induction of Marc Bloch and Simone Vidal into the Pantheon is a worthy sign of recognition of their exceptional lives and contributions to French history. It reminds us of the importance of resistance against oppression and the defense of democratic values.
