Paris – 23.06.2026: The historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch was posthumously buried in the Paris Pantheon on June 23, 2026. Along with his wife Simone, he received recognition that highlights his contributions to historiography and his participation in the fight against the Nazi occupation.

Family members of Bloch, including his granddaughter Suzette, also took part in the moving event. Inclusion in the Pantheon is one of France’s highest honors and honors those who have made significant contributions to the Republic.
Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a co-founder of the so-called Annales School, which shaped modern historiography with new methods and perspectives. In addition to his scientific work, he participated in the resistance movement against the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. In 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo, tortured, and ultimately executed.
The decision to include him in the Pantheon was announced by President Macron in November 2024. Initially, the Bloch family feared that the memory of Marc Bloch could be politically exploited. After intense discussions, it was agreed to hold the commemoration as a purely civic ceremony without religious or nationalist elements.
The ceremony was marked by many symbolic elements. Actors such as Jacques Gamblin and Lou de Laâge read touching texts accompanied by Gabriel Fauré’s “Pavane”. The commemoration was accompanied by the Republican Guard. The graves of Marc and Simone Bloch were decorated with personal items, including military medals and letters.
Thanks to this pantheonization, Marc Bloch is honored as a defender of truth and as a symbol of intellectual and moral resistance in France. His legacy and courage in the fight against occupation remain an important heritage, reminding French society of the values of freedom, democracy, and human dignity.
To accompany the commemoration, the Pantheon is presenting the exhibition “Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire” from June 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027. It provides an insight into his life, scientific work, and participation in the resistance movement.
