France is experiencing a historic heat wave with record temperatures and the first cases of death

Paris – 23.06.2026: France is currently experiencing an exceptionally early and intense heatwave that started on June 17 and is expected to last at least until the end of June. On June 23, the highest average national temperature in history was recorded – 29.8 °C.

Extreme temperatures have caused numerous school closures and train cancellations. At least 40 deaths by drowning in rivers and lakes have also been recorded, as many people tried to cool off in unregulated bathing waters. Particularly alarming cases have been documented in regions around the large Loire and Rhône rivers, where strong currents and the absence of supervised beaches have led to several accidents.

In response to the heatwave, the highest alert level – red – has been declared in 54 departments, with an orange level in another 35 departments. These measures affect over 90% of France’s population. Authorities have activated emergency plans for special protection of vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, children, and chronically ill. Volunteer organizations are also coordinating humanitarian missions to distribute water and support those affected.

The heatwave is also impacting infrastructure: rail transport suffers from heat-related effects, causing train delays and cancellations. In addition, several nuclear power plants are forced to reduce production due to the warming of the water bodies they use for cooling. The state energy company EDF has already reported disruptions at the Golfech plant in the south, as well as at Blayais, Bugey, and Saint-Alban in the east. Due to reduced electricity production, the risk of energy shortages is increasing, so the population is urged to consume energy consciously.

Climatologists consider the current heatwave a clear signal of rising global warming. According to their calculations, recorded temperatures are 4 °C higher than they would be without human-caused climate change. These events underline the urgent need for adaptation and protection against extreme weather phenomena.

Authorities recommend the public avoid physical exertion during heat, drink plenty of water, stay in cool places, and carefully follow warnings. Special cooling points have been opened in several cities where people without air conditioning can safely stay.

This extraordinary heatwave creates strain not only on health and infrastructure but also on agriculture, which is suffering from drought. Experts call for enhanced preparation for more frequent and intense heat periods through sustainable use of water resources and adapted cultivation methods. The current situation is significantly changing awareness regarding climate adaptation in France.
