Beirut – 31 May 2026: Israel has officially announced the expansion of its military operations into Lebanon and is calling on the population in the south of the country to evacuate immediately, particularly all areas south of the Zahrani River. A spokesperson for the Israeli military published this message in Arabic on Telegram on Sunday. It merely notes that the Israeli army considers any sites used by Hezbollah for military purposes to be legitimate targets. Hezbollah is a Shiite Lebanese paramilitary organization with strong political influence and close ties to Iran, and is Israel’s main opponent in the region.
The expansion of operations comes amid rising tensions between Israel, Iran and Hezbollah in recent weeks. Israel justifies its military operations with the aim of neutralizing security threats posed by armed Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and preventing possible attacks. The Lebanese government expressed concern about developments and called on all parties to exercise restraint in order to avoid further destabilization of the country and the region.
The evacuation call concerns numerous settlements near the border that are regarded as potential combat zones. Lebanese authorities are working to coordinate evacuation logistics, but the tense security situation together with infrastructure problems is making the process considerably more difficult. The humanitarian situation in the region is worsening, causing concern among international organizations as well.
At the international level, concern is growing over the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East. The United Nations and several countries are calling on both sides of the conflict to de-escalate and show willingness to engage in dialogue in order to prevent a large-scale confrontation. The U.S. State Department also expressed concern and emphasized the urgent need for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Hezbollah responded to the Israeli announcement with warnings of possible further attacks and called them a provocation. The organization stated that it would respond defensively to possible strikes and strengthen its positions in Lebanon. The situation remains tense, and it is unknown to what extent the paramilitary organization will respond militarily in the coming days.
The situation in the Middle East continues to develop dynamically and dangerously, with Lebanon remaining at the epicenter of the growing confrontation between Israel and its opponents. The international community is closely monitoring developments. In the coming hours and days, it will become clear whether diplomatic efforts can prevent further escalation or whether the conflict will intensify even more.
Overall, the current situation marks a critical phase in the Middle East conflict that could have far-reaching consequences for the stability of the entire region.
