Ardèche Department Strengthens Sanctions for Using Mobile Phones While Driving

Privas – June 2, 2026: Starting June 1, 2026, drivers caught talking on their mobile phones while driving in the Ardèche region of France will face immediate license suspension. This measure aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents.

This decision was made by Benoît Trevisani, the prefect of Ardèche, in response to a series of serious traffic accidents in 2026. As of the end of May, the number of traffic accident fatalities in the department reached 19, equal to the total number for the previous year. A particularly tragic accident occurred in Vernosc-lès-Annonay, where five young people lost their lives.

Under the new rules, drivers caught holding a mobile phone while driving face the risk of immediate administrative license suspension. This measure is in addition to existing penalties, including a €135 fine and a 3-point deduction from the license. The suspension period may last up to six months depending on the severity of the offense and the prefect’s decision.

With this decision, Ardèche will align itself with other French departments that have already implemented similar measures. Immediate license suspension for mobile phone use while driving is already enforced in the Landes, Pas-de-Calais, Charente-Maritime, and Lot-et-Garonne departments.

Authorities emphasize that using a mobile phone while driving is a major risk factor in road traffic. According to French safety agencies, reading messages while driving increases the risk of an accident by 23 times, as drivers typically take their eyes off the road for an average of five seconds.

The introduction of this measure in Ardèche is part of a comprehensive plan to improve road safety in the department. In addition to tougher penalties, enforcement and preventive measures are being strengthened to raise awareness among drivers about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.

The effectiveness of these enhanced sanctions will be closely monitored over the coming months to determine whether they lead to a reduction in traffic accidents and related fatalities. Authorities hope these measures will sustainably decrease the incidence of traffic accidents within Ardèche.
