Washington – June 12, 2026: President Donald Trump announced on June 11, 2026, that he had suddenly canceled the planned airstrike against Iran scheduled for the same day. In a post on the platform Truth Social, he explained that the planned attack was called off because negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran were conducted and approved at the highest level.
Trump said that the “final point” was approved by all parties involved, and “the date and place of the signing will be announced soon.” However, he emphasized that the US blockade of Iranian ports, introduced in mid-April Middle East time, will continue until the “deal is finalized.”
This announcement contrasts with Trump’s previous stance when he once threatened to attack Iran “very harshly” and take control of the country’s critical oil infrastructure. Trump had expressed a “very strong and very powerful” response in an interview with the US broadcaster ABC after Iranian forces shot down a US Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite Trump mentioning a “very good deal,” the Iranian government stated that it has not yet made a final decision on signing the proposed peace treaty. A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry in Tehran emphasized that negotiations are ongoing and the leadership is carefully examining the conditions before making a decision.
The situation remains tense. The international community is closely watching the progress of negotiations between the US and Iran. A peace agreement could be an important step toward easing tensions in the Middle East region.
Previously, under the Trump administration, the US launched a large-scale airstrike campaign against Iran on June 21, 2025, targeting nuclear facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. This move marked a significant shift from years of diplomatic efforts and was carried out in parallel with Israeli military operations. Trump called this operation “very successful,” stated that Iran’s uranium enrichment capability was “completely destroyed,” and hinted at further intense attacks.
This escalation caused significant instability in the region, increasing the risk of Iranian retaliatory measures and heightened geopolitical tensions in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The European Union feels deeply impacted by these developments and the abandonment of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), although despite this setback, Iran may be seeking to strengthen its nuclear deterrent.
Israel views the military action positively, but the risk of a prolonged conflict remains, potentially fundamentally altering the regional balance of power and shaking international law. Given the complexity of the situation, all parties involved are carefully monitoring further progress in diplomatic efforts, aiming for sustained tension reduction.
