After Rihanna's death, the Speaker of the National Assembly demanded the addition of the "Gender and Sexual Violence Prevention Act" to the parliamentary agenda.

Paris – June 9, 2026: Following the tragic death of Rihanna in the Yelle department, National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet called for the immediate addition of the “Gender and Sexual Violence Prevention Law” to the parliamentary agenda. This cross-party law is supported by more than 100 deputies and aims to implement comprehensive measures against gender and sexual violence.

Deputy Celine Thiebaut-Martinez submitted a bill consisting of about 80 articles in November 2025, together with a broad parliamentary coalition. This bill is based on 140 recommendations from the “Feminist Coalition for Comprehensive Legislation,” which is supported by numerous organizations.

President Braun-Pivet emphasized that this issue is a national priority beyond party lines and called on the President to include the bill on the agenda of a special session of the National Assembly in July or September.

The bill includes the establishment of specialized courts to handle cases of gender and sexual violence, the introduction of annual confidential interviews starting from kindergarten children to enable early detection of violence, and employment bans for those convicted of sexual violence working with minors.

President Braun-Pivet stressed the urgency of quickly enacting this law to bring justice to victims and prevent future tragedies, stating that the fight against gender and sexual violence must be conducted at all levels.

The tragic events surrounding Rihanna have sparked numerous memorial events nationwide and rekindled public debate on the response to gender and sexual violence in France. The demand for comprehensive legislation reflects a broad desire for effective measures to protect women and children from violence.

Upcoming parliamentary deliberations will be critical in determining whether this law is actually enacted and what specific measures will be taken to ensure the safety and welfare of women and children in France.
