Paris – 25 May 2026: from Sunday night into Monday new May high-temperature records were observed in the western French cities of Lorient, Quimper and Nantes. These unusual temperatures are part of a nationwide heatwave that also affects western regions of France, among other areas.

According to Météo-France, 30.6°C was recorded in Quimper, 30.4°C in Lorient and 30.2°C in Nantes. These figures far exceed previous May highs and represent unusually high temperatures for the region.

This heatwave has arrived unusually early and with particular intensity. For this reason, Météo-France has issued a “Vigilance Jaune Canicule (Yellow Heat Alert)” for 13 western departments: Finistère, Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine, Mayenne, Sarthe, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire, Loire-Atlantique, Vendée, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne and Charente. This is the first time such an alert has been issued in May since the system was introduced in 2004.

The high temperatures are already affecting various aspects of public life. At sporting events several participants were transported to hospital with heat-related illness. In the Paris suburb of Maisons-Alfort, 14 people were taken to hospital after a race, ten of them in serious condition.

Experts attribute the current heatwave to a meteorological phenomenon known as an “omega block.” This involves a stable high-pressure zone that stalls warm air over a wide area, producing abnormally high temperatures.

Authorities are advising residents, especially in the most affected areas, to take precautions. Specifically, they recommend staying in the shade during the hottest hours of the day, drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding physical exertion.

These abnormal temperatures also raise questions about climate change. Climatologists warn that as global warming progresses, such heatwaves may become more frequent.

The current weather situation and associated alerts are expected to remain in place through the coming weekend. It is recommended to follow local forecasts and authorities’ instructions.
