The younger generation uses TikTok to cope with climate anxiety during heatwaves

Paris – June 24, 2026: As France experiences a historic heatwave, an increasing number of young people under 25 are using the TikTok platform to cope with their fears in the face of the climate crisis. Social media not only provides entertainment but also offers an important space for sharing ecological concerns and personal experiences.

The current heatwave has caused temperatures to reach 40°C in many areas and has led to various health issues. According to the Ministry of Health, since June 18, there have been 40 drowning deaths, primarily among young people. These figures highlight the severe consequences of high temperatures, which affect not only physical health but also place stress on mental health.

In this context, “eco-anxiety” is gradually becoming a focus of attention; this is a psychological state caused by perceived environmental destruction and fear of the future. Psychologists warn about the impact of climate change on mental health, especially on the increasingly helpless younger generation.

TikTok has become an important platform for young users to share concerns, support each other, and discuss concrete measures to address climate change. These digital communities offer those affected a safe place to feel understood and to jointly seek solutions.

At the same time, there are also critical voices questioning TikTok’s role in handling mental health issues. In March 2026, the French Ministry of Education launched an investigation into the platform due to content that may promote eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide. These concerns have sparked discussions about social media responsibility and its impact on mental health.

Despite the risks, TikTok remains a central place for many young people to discuss climate anxiety. Experts emphasize the importance of fostering such communities to raise environmental awareness and mobilize collective action. However, the quality of information must be strictly reviewed to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Thus, social media plays a dual role: it can provide support but also create new pressures and uncertainties. Society and policymakers need to responsibly guide the use of digital platforms and strengthen measures to protect mental health.

Given the ongoing heatwave and the profound impacts of climate change, structural measures must be taken to continuously protect public mental health and effectively address the root causes of global warming. Only through a combination of personal support and political action can these challenges be adequately met.
