A nursery school in Bordeaux suspected of sexual assault: five reports filed, investigation launched

Bordeaux – 2026-07-01: The Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has opened a preliminary criminal investigation after several parents reported an alleged rape and sexual assault at a municipal nursery school to the authorities. According to several local media reports, the judiciary has currently received five complaints. An investigation into the specific circumstances is underway; relevant police departments have recorded leads and conducted initial interviews.

According to the information currently available, the investigation focuses on two non-teaching staff members (ATSEMs), who are responsible for daily care and support work in French nursery schools. The authorities have not yet confirmed any specific coercive measures such as arrests or being taken into custody. All persons concerned are presumed innocent unless a court rules otherwise.

Parents, school management and the municipal administration have remained in close communication since the allegations became public. According to administrative sources, short-term protective measures have been taken for the affected children. These typically include adjusting care arrangements, separating potentially problematic contact relationships and providing psychosocial support. School district leadership and the Direction des services départementaux de l’Éducation nationale have been involved; the city administration emphasizes that safety and care are the top priorities.

From a legal perspective, the public prosecutor’s office is examining whether a formal judicial investigation should be opened or whether the case should continue as a preliminary investigation. At the same time, employment-related or disciplinary proceedings against the staff involved may also be reviewed and initiated, provided this is necessary to protect the children and preserve the investigation. Medical examinations and confidential interviews of children in France are generally conducted under special protection standards to minimize potential trauma and ensure the admissibility of evidence in court.

The case comes at a time of heightened sensitivity toward abuse in childcare and educational institutions. Since the beginning of 2026, several departments have strengthened reporting procedures and internal oversight mechanisms; cooperation between the judiciary, police, school authorities and local governments has been standardized in many places. Relevant professional bodies point out that indications should be documented as early as possible, parents informed promptly and staff closely monitored.

Parent representatives in Bordeaux are calling for a transparent explanation of the current protective measures at the school concerned, as well as possible reviews of process organization and oversight. At the same time, investigating authorities are urging people to avoid speculation and protect the children’s privacy. Based on the current situation, assessing statements and other leads will take several days; the public prosecutor’s office will promptly communicate the next steps without jeopardizing the proceedings.
