Heatwave causes prices of air-conditioning units and fans to surge

The groups are calling for greater price transparency, clear identification of sellers, and effective moderation of misleading listings. Platforms state that flexible pricing is generally legal, while emphasizing internal monitoring and the display of reference prices.

Some supermarket chains revised their promotional policies after advertised items sold out within hours and were subsequently relisted online at higher prices. Measures included reducing promotional quantities or changing start times to avoid crowds and spread supply more evenly throughout the day. Industry sources believe the supply situation will improve only with new deliveries and the end of the heatwave.

Energy advisers point out that not all mobile air conditioners are economically worthwhile. Important factors include room size, energy efficiency class, noise levels, and proper exhaust handling. Before buying, consumers are advised to compare prices and check warranties, return rights, and power consumption. For households with long-term cooling needs, reversible heat pumps and structural measures such as shading, insulation, and nighttime ventilation may reduce operating costs. Such advisory services are subsidized by the state in France.

In the short term, many households will need to obtain small fans, shade sun-exposed windows, and create cool zones. Health authorities urge people to drink enough water, avoid strenuous physical activity, and pay particular attention to older people and those with pre-existing conditions. Authorities and consumer protection groups said they will monitor price developments and marketplace listings more closely over the coming days to deter abuse and stabilize supply.
