Reopening of JR’s “Caverne” at Pont-Neuf after emergency repairs

Paris – June 17, 2026: The monumental art installation “La Caverne du Pont-Neuf” by French street artist JR has reopened to the public following extensive repair work. The opening, originally scheduled for June 6, 2026, was postponed to June 15 due to damage caused by strong winds and heavy rain.

The installation transforms the 17th-century Pont-Neuf into an artificial cave measuring an impressive 18 meters high and 120 meters long. It consists of 80 inflatable arches, and more than 800 people in France participated in its construction. The project was funded by sales of JR’s artworks and private sponsors.

Visitors can enter the “Caverne” 24 hours a day until June 28, 2026. The immersive experience is complemented by a soundscape designed by Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, and a specially created fragrance reminiscent of the smell of earth after rain.

JR, known for his large-scale public artworks, drew inspiration for this project from Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1985 wrapping of the Pont-Neuf. “La Caverne” is a tribute to this historic event and invites visitors to experience Paris’s oldest bridge in a new and captivating way.

The installation is a technical masterpiece, erected directly over the Pont-Neuf without using nails or screws, thereby protecting the bridge’s historical value. Produced entirely in France, it demonstrates the innovative capacity of the French art scene.

Despite delays caused by the initial deterioration in weather conditions, the “Caverne” has attracted many visitors enjoying its unique atmosphere and artistic concept. The installation offers an opportunity to rediscover the connection between art, history, and architecture in Paris.
