Marc Bloch and his wife Simone are interred in the Panthéon.

Paris – June 23, 2026: The historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch was interred in the Panthéon in Paris on June 23, 2026, posthumously. Together with his wife Simone, he was honored for his contributions to history and his resistance activities against the Nazi occupation.

The ceremony, presided over by President Emmanuel Macron, began in the evening and was attended by political, cultural, and academic figures. Members of the Bloch family, especially his granddaughter Suzette, also took part in this moving event. Being interred in the Panthéon is one of the highest honors in France and symbolizes recognition of those who have contributed to the Republic.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a co-founder of the so-called Annales School, pioneering modern historical scholarship with new methods and perspectives. Beyond his academic achievements, he actively participated in the resistance against the Nazi occupation during World War II. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944, tortured, and ultimately executed.

The decision to inter him in the Panthéon was announced by President Macron in November 2024. Initially, there were concerns within the Bloch family that his commemoration might be politicized. After multiple in-depth discussions, it was agreed to hold the ceremony purely as a civic celebration, excluding religious or nationalist elements.

The ceremony was full of symbolic elements. Actors Jacques Gamblin and Lou de Laâge delivered moving readings, and Gabriel Fauré’s “Pavane” was performed as the musical piece. The celebration was conducted under the ceremonial guard of the Republic, and the graves of Marc and Simone Bloch were decorated with personal mementos such as military decorations and letters.

By being interred in the Panthéon, Marc Bloch is honored as a guardian of truth and a symbol of French intellectual and moral resistance. His work and courage against the occupation remain an important legacy reminding French society of values such as freedom, democracy, and human dignity.

In conjunction with this commemorative event, the Panthéon is hosting the exhibition “Marc Bloch, the Spirit of History (Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire)” from June 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027, which highlights his life, scholarly research, and resistance activities.

The interment of Marc Bloch and his wife Simone in the Panthéon underlines the importance of honoring historical figures who dedicated themselves to the Republic. It contributes to strengthening the culture of memory in France and preserving lessons from the past for the future.
