Var wildfires: Hundreds of firefighters continue battling the blaze in Taradeau

Taradeau – July 20, 2026: The smell of smoke still hangs over the hills of central Var in the morning. Between Taradeau and Les Arcs-sur-Argens, around 360 firefighters continue working to extinguish the last embers of a vegetation fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon. The incident command expected to bring the fire under control during the morning or early afternoon.

According to the initial investigation, the fire spread rapidly near Taradeau around 3:20 p.m. and crossed into the municipal area of Les Arcs-sur-Argens. Wind and extremely dry vegetation fueled its spread. In the evening, more than 600 emergency personnel were deployed at times, including over 200 vehicles, firefighting aircraft and helicopters.

The Var prefecture activated its crisis response center, and a field command post was set up in Les Arcs-sur-Argens. As a precaution, residents of several residential areas had to leave their homes. Most were later able to return. Vehicle access remained restricted in some areas to avoid hindering firefighting operations.

According to a situation report issued on Sunday evening, around 200 hectares were engulfed in flames. Several buildings in Les Arcs-sur-Argens were damaged or severely affected. By Monday morning, a final assessment of the damage was not yet available. Authorities are currently focusing on protecting homes and infrastructure and detecting any possible flare-ups early.

The fire also affected transport. Several roads around Taradeau and Les Arcs-sur-Argens were temporarily closed. Rail services between Toulon and Les Arcs had to be suspended on Sunday after the flames spread near the tracks. For travelers and residents already facing a tense night, this meant long detours and uncertainty.

According to the information available so far, one firefighter suffered a minor hand injury. By Monday morning, there was no information about further injuries. No confirmed information was yet available regarding the cause of the fire. An investigation is likely to begin only after the fire scene has been fully secured and emergency personnel have completed extinguishing operations.

The response once again shows how quickly fires in the inland areas of the Côte d’Azur can become a threat to residential areas during summer. Although the direct threat to residents of Taradeau and Les Arcs-sur-Argens has decreased significantly since the previous evening, the vigilance of firefighters remains crucial as long as embers remain beneath ash and dry undergrowth.
