Var: Ban on vehicles over 13 tons implemented in Ollières

Ollioules – June 16, 2026: The city of Ollioules in the Var department recently implemented a measure prohibiting the passage of large freight vehicles exceeding a total authorized weight of 13 tons. This measure aims to resolve problems frequently caused by large vehicles on narrow roads and to enhance the safety of residents. After citizens repeatedly expressed concerns about traffic volume and the associated risks, Mayor Olivier Barthélémy proposed this ban.

The city’s narrow road infrastructure is congested daily by up to 600 freight vehicles, which has negatively affected not only traffic safety but also the quality of life of residents. One resident reported that drivers find it difficult to recognize them, so they do not leave their home without a reflective vest. This situation clearly demonstrates the necessity for local authorities to take action.

However, the Var prefecture opposes this ban. The prefecture argues that the affected roads are among the main interdepartmental transport axes and are particularly essential for regional transportation. They claim that banning freight vehicles would cause significant economic loss. In France, regulations prohibit freight vehicles over 7.5 tons from driving on weekends and holidays, but more stringent local restrictions such as in Ollioules require prefecture approval.

The prefecture’s position has caused tensions within the city of Ollioules. Mayor Barthélémy prioritizes the protection of citizens and is calling for alternative routes to divert heavy freight vehicles away from the city center. He emphasizes that the current traffic volume is unsuitable for the local infrastructure and urgent action is needed.

The situation in Ollioules represents many small municipalities in France facing similar issues caused by transit traffic. Balancing transportation demand and resident protection is often difficult, and flexible solutions suited to the situation are required.

So far, no agreement has been reached between the city and the prefecture. The debate over the freight vehicle ban clearly illustrates the complexity of traffic regulation and the need for a balanced approach. The city of Ollioules remains in a tense state as it seeks a solution that satisfies both economic needs and residents’ quality of life.

The unfolding situation in Ollioules shows a typical conflict pattern between local government and national transport authorities, attracting attention on multiple levels.
