June 16 remarkably connects very different chapters of history: the collapse of the Roman Empire, Napoleon’s final campaigns, the rise of the automobile industry, the fight against racial segregation, as well as decisive turning points of the French Republic. Especially the events of 1940 and 1946 show how closely crises and political new beginnings are intertwined in the history of France.
