173 people rescued after engine fire on inflatable boat in the English Channel

Boulogne-sur-Mer – 04.08.2026: On Tuesday morning, 173 migrants in distress were rescued from an inflatable boat off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer. According to Franceinfo, the boat was severely overcrowded; its engine caught fire during the attempted crossing to the United Kingdom. Those rescued were taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer. No information on injuries or fatalities was initially available.

The incident occurred on one of Europe’s busiest and most dangerous migration routes. From the northern French coast, people attempt to cross the English Channel in small inflatable boats. The boats, which are hardly suitable for journeys on the open sea, are equipped with outboard engines and fuel and are often loaded far beyond their intended capacity.

An engine fire significantly increases the danger on such a boat. Leaking fuel, open flames, severe overcrowding and sudden movements can lead within a short time to burns, panic or capsizing. There are also currents, low water temperatures and dense shipping traffic in the Strait of Dover. The regional French maritime rescue coordination centre, CROSS Gris-Nez, coordinates rescue operations in this section of the English Channel.

According to Franceinfo investigations, criminal smuggling networks are behind the crossings. They procure inflatable boats, engines and other equipment and charge money for the passage. Boarding can itself be dangerous: when more people push to join a journey than the boat can carry, uncontrollable situations arise. Those affected have hardly any ability to influence the condition of the equipment or the number of fellow passengers.

The extent to which boats are now being overcrowded is also evident from a hearing of the French National Assembly. According to the hearing, an average of 12 people were on a boat in 2020, compared with 54 in 2024. At the beginning of 2026, authorities sometimes recorded more than 60 people per boat. With 173 people rescued, the operation off Boulogne-sur-Mer was far above these comparative figures, although the available information does not indicate how many people the inflatable boat was designed to carry.

France and the United Kingdom cooperate in monitoring the route and combating smuggling networks. Operational responsibility at sea, however, depends on the location of the emergency; the duty to rescue people in danger applies regardless of their residency status. On Tuesday, the operation ended with all 173 occupants returning to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
