38-Year-Old Dies After Lightning Strike at Workshop in Dolomieu

Dolomieu – 17 July 2026: A 38-year-old man died in a workshop fire during the night into Friday in Dolomieu, in the north of the Isere department. According to consistent reports, the building was struck by lightning at around 11 p.m. during a severe thunderstorm. The workshop subsequently caught fire. Emergency services found the business owner dead in the destroyed building.

According to local reports, the business was a metalworking and welding workshop on Route de Bordenoud. The building had been set up in a former chapel. According to sources close to the investigation, the man is believed to have tried to fight the fire with a fire extinguisher. However, he was unable to leave the building.

The fire brigade deployed a large contingent. According to local media, 57 firefighters and 30 vehicles were involved. Firefighting efforts were hampered by strong wind gusts. There was also a particular danger due to gas and acetylene cylinders stored in the workshop. Several explosions were reported; the fire was brought under control during the night.

The Bourgoin-Jallieu public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation. It is intended to clarify the exact circumstances of the death and the cause of the fire. Based on what is known so far, authorities assume that a lightning strike triggered the fire. No indications of another cause of the fire were initially reported.

Dolomieu is located near La Tour-du-Pin in the northeast of the Isere department. The municipality was among the places affected by severe thunderstorms on Thursday evening. The prefecture recorded numerous callouts in northern Isere due to storm and lightning damage. The department’s fire service reported a total of 21 weather-related deployments between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The thunderstorms affected large parts of France on Thursday. In addition to the death in Dolomieu, a 31-year-old woman died in Saint-Victurnien, in the Haute-Vienne department, after a tree fell on her during a wind gust. According to data from weather service provider Meteorage, 20,379 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were recorded nationwide on July 16, more than on any other day of 2026.

On Friday morning, the elevated official severe-weather warnings for thunderstorms were lifted. However, the damage caused by the storms remained visible in many places: fallen trees, damaged roofs, hail damage and power outages affected several regions. In Dolomieu, the criminal investigation is now the focus, while firefighters and authorities continue to document the consequences of the fatal fire.
