619 distinctions in the Légion d’honneur National Day promotion

Paris – 14/07/2026: France’s Légion d’honneur is recognising 619 people in its National Day promotion. The list announced on Tuesday includes figures from culture, business, public service, science and civic engagement. Those honoured include actress Natalie Portman, actor Pierre Arditi, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, and playwright and director Wajdi Mouawad.

The distinctions are distributed across all ranks of the order. They include 518 appointments as Knight or Dame, 79 promotions to Officer, and 16 to Commander. In addition, there are four appointments as Grand Officer and two awards at the highest rank, the Grand Cross. Together, these make up the 619 names in this year’s summer promotion.

The Légion d’honneur is France’s highest national distinction. It may be awarded to French nationals as well as foreign figures when their achievements are recognised as exceptional service to France or in the country’s international interest. The selection therefore regularly includes people from a wide range of professions and areas of society.

Appointments and promotions are formally made by decree of the President of the Republic and published in the Journal officiel. The process requires nominations to be reviewed before the council of the order issues its opinion. Civil promotions traditionally take place twice a year: on 1 January and 14 July, France’s National Day.

Natalie Portman, an internationally renowned actress who has maintained close professional and personal ties with France for years, is among those being honoured. Pierre Arditi is one of the defining French stage and film actors of his generation. As France’s former finance minister and current President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde represents a career in international economic and financial policy.

Wajdi Mouawad is being recognised for his work as an author, director and theatre director. Born in Lebanon and raised in Canada, the artist has long been closely associated with French theatre. His works frequently address memory, violence, family history and the consequences of displacement. The selection of these names illustrates the broad cultural and institutional scope of this year’s promotion.

The announcement coincides with the 14 July celebrations, during which France commemorates the French Revolution and the national community. The decoration itself is not automatically presented on the day of publication: recipients receive their insignia in separate ceremonies. Membership in the order is only formally completed with official admission and presentation.
