Paris Saint-Germain Defends Champions League Title with Dramatic Penalty Shootout Victory over Arsenal

Budapest – 05/30/2026: In a thrilling UEFA Champions League final, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) faced Arsenal at the Puskás Aréna. After 120 minutes during which Arsenal took an early lead through Kai Havertz in the 5th minute and PSG equalized with a penalty by Ousmane Dembélé in the 65th, the winner had to be decided by a penalty shootout. PSG triumphed 4-3 on penalties, securing their second consecutive title.

The match started with a shock for the Parisians, as Havertz scored past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma off a deflected ball. PSG then took control of the game but initially failed to create clear chances. In the second half, the Parisian pressure was rewarded when Dembélé confidently converted a penalty after a foul on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

During extra time, both teams had few opportunities to decide the match. The shootout ultimately decided the outcome, with Arsenal missing two shots. Gabriel Magalhães failed on the final attempt by shooting over the goal. PSG converted all their penalties, sealing the Champions League title once again.

For PSG coach Luis Enrique, it was the third Champions League title of his career. He praised his players’ determination and emphasized the significance of this victory for the club. Despite great pressure and heavy demands, the team kept their composure, which proved to be the decisive factor.

By winning in 2026, PSG made history. They became the second club after Real Madrid to successfully defend the Champions League title in consecutive years. The club now firmly establishes itself as a dominant force in European football and proves it will remain a serious contender for international titles in the years to come.

In Paris, fans responded with euphoria and celebrated exuberantly. However, there were also disturbances during the celebrations. According to police reports, 79 people were arrested, with 45 taken into custody. Security forces confiscated 24 flares and over 100 fireworks. One police officer was injured in the unrest and required medical treatment.

Despite the incidents, the sporting triumph of Paris Saint-Germain sparked great excitement. The club once again demonstrated its strength and resolve to remain at the pinnacle of European football. The back-to-back Champions League titles mark a milestone in the club’s history and set a high standard for the upcoming season.
