The Best Cheese in the World Is Not French… but Spanish

The World Cheese Awards, which annually honor the best cheese in the world, have just selected a Spanish cheese for 2021.

Five votes separated the gold medal from the silver… much to the chagrin of the French. The World Cheese Awards have just awarded Olavidia, a soft goat cheese from Spain. The French cheese company Berthaut won silver.

“Until the last cheese we tasted, we thought we would be world champions,” said Christophe Prouvost, managing director of the Berthaut cheese dairy, to the newspaper Figaro. He is not “disappointed,” but adds that the award is undoubtedly a “wink” to the country that hosted the competition this year, namely Spain. The man is especially happy about the attention his cheese dairy is receiving. “We are very pleased because it will strengthen the reputation of the cheese dairy, which already exports 30% of its production worldwide.”

The competition, which could not take place in 2020 due to the health crisis, awarded an American cheese in 2019.
