PSG defends the Champions League title, Wembanyama leads the Spurs to the NBA final, Swiatek and Gauff eliminated at Roland-Garros

Paris – 30.05.2026: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) crowned themselves on Saturday night at the Puskás Arena in Budapest with their second consecutive Champions League title. After an exciting final against Arsenal, the match ended 1-1 in regular time. In the subsequent penalty shootout, the French club won 4-3 and secured the coveted trophy once again. This achievement places PSG among the few European champions who have successfully defended their title.

The city of Paris celebrated the team exuberantly despite the tense security situation following recent riots, which resulted in nearly 900 arrests nationwide. Thousands of fans gathered at the Champ-de-Mars to pay tribute to the players. Captain Marquinhos, coach Luis Enrique, and top scorer Ousmane Dembélé proudly displayed the trophy and already set their sights on the next season and the anticipated third consecutive victory.

In basketball, the Frenchman Victor Wembanyama attracted attention by leading the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014. In the decisive seventh game of the Western Conference Finals, the Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103. Wembanyama scored 22 points and was named the series MVP. On average, he achieved an impressive 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.7 blocks per game.

The Spurs will face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, who are competing for the championship after 27 years. The first game of the final series will be played next Wednesday at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.

At the French Open in Roland-Garros, the title dream ended early for the favorites Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff. The world number one, the Polish Swiatek, was defeated by the unseeded French Clara Burel in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 2-6), while the American Gauff fell 5-7, 3-6 against the 15th seeded Russian, Daria Kasatkina. Both showed great commitment despite the defeats and sparked abundant debate in the tennis world.

Beyond the sporting performance, PSG’s renewed Champions League triumph also has an economic dimension: thanks to the victory prize and additional revenues, the club can generate financial margins that exceed the budgets of several teams in the French first division.

Last weekend reflected the diversity of elite sports, with dramatic decisions, historic moments, and a gaze towards exciting future competitions and championships.
