PSG defends Champions League title, Wembanyama leads Spurs to NBA final, Swiatek and Gauff eliminated at Roland Garros

Paris – 30.05.2026: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won their second consecutive Champions League title on Saturday evening at the Puskás Arena in Budapest. After an exciting final against Arsenal, the score was 1-1 at the end of regular time. In the subsequent penalty shootout, the French top club won 4-3 and secured the coveted trophy once again. This success catapults PSG into the ranks of few European winners who have managed to defend their title.

The city of Paris celebrated the team exuberantly despite the tense security situation following recent unrests during which nearly 900 people were arrested nationwide. Thousands of fans gathered at the Champ-de-Mars to honor the players. Captain Marquinhos, coach Luis Enrique, and goal scorer Ousmane Dembélé proudly displayed the trophy and already set their sights on the upcoming season and hopefully a third consecutive victory.

In basketball, Frenchman Victor Wembanyama drew attention by leading the San Antonio Spurs back to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014. In the decisive seventh game of the Western Conference Finals, the Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103. Wembanyama scored 22 points and was named MVP of the series. On average, he posted impressive stats of 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.7 blocks per game.

The Spurs will face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, who are competing for the championship again after 27 years. The first game of the finals series will take place next Wednesday at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.

At the French Open in Roland-Garros, the dreams of title favorites Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff ended prematurely. The Polish world number one, Swiatek, lost in three sets to the unseeded Frenchwoman Clara Burel (6-4, 3-6, 2-6), while the American Gauff was eliminated 5-7, 3-6 by the 15th-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina. Despite their defeats, both showed strong determination and provided much food for thought in the tennis world.

Apart from the sporting highlights, PSG’s renewed Champions League victory also has an economic dimension: through prize money and other revenues, the club can create financial space larger than the budgets of several French top-tier clubs.

The past weekend reflected the versatility of top-level sports – with dramatic decisions, historic moments, and a look ahead to more exciting competitions and championships.
