Ardèche increases penalties for mobile phone use while driving: license suspension for up to six months

Privas – 01.06.2026: In the French region of Ardèche, a new rule comes into effect today, which provides for the immediate revocation of driving licenses for drivers caught talking on the phone while driving. This measure was introduced by Benoît Trevisani, the prefect of Ardèche, and aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents.

The decision, which takes effect on June 1, 2026, was made after a series of serious road accidents involving mobile phone usage. In 2026, 19 people have already died on Ardèche roads, which equals the total number of deaths in 2025. Particularly tragic was the accident on May 1, 2026, in Vernoux-les-Annonay, where five young people died. These cases prompted authorities to take stricter measures.

From now on, drivers caught holding a mobile phone while driving can expect immediate administrative revocation of their driving licenses. The duration of the license suspension can be up to six months depending on the severity of the violation and the prefect’s assessment of the case. In addition to losing their licence, drivers face a fine of 135 euros and a loss of three points in the driving license points system.

This measure is part of a broader plan to improve road safety in the region. Since January 15, 2026, stricter penalties have already been introduced for other traffic violations, including speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The “Zero Tolerance for Road Accidents” plan also includes increased enforcement, the creation of a road safety and prevention office, as well as preventive measures for young drivers and motorcyclists.

The decision in Ardèche supports similar initiatives in other French departments. Already in November 2025, the Landes department introduced immediate revocation of driving licenses for mobile phone use while driving. Other departments, including Charente-Maritime, Lot-et-Garonne, and Pas-de-Calais, have introduced similar measures. This trend indicates a tougher approach to violations related to mobile phone use behind the wheel.

Authorities emphasize that mobile phone use while driving presents a significant risk to road safety. Studies have shown that texting while driving increases the risk of accidents by 23 times. Therefore, the new rule is considered a necessary step to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities in the region.
