The mayoral office of Lyon confirms ban on foie gras at official receptions

The Green Party governing Lyon believes that the production of foie gras “does not guarantee the welfare of the animals”.

The city administration of Lyon confirms the ban on foie gras, considered a delicacy, at official receptions. This was reported by Franceinfo, confirming a report by Lyon Mag.

The city of Lyon has not ordered foie gras since October 2020. This decision was made by the city administration led by Grégory Doucet, the mayor of Lyon representing EELV, because the production of foie gras allegedly “does not guarantee the welfare of the animals”. As a result, this traditional gastronomic product is no longer found at receptions and official events of the city of Lyon. A decision that especially calls out former mayor Gérard Collomb, who describes the ban as “a pity for Lyon, the capital of gastronomy.”

Lyon is not the only city to have made this decision: foie gras has also been banned from buffets in Grenoble and Villeurbanne. In Strasbourg, too, the Green mayor Jeanne Barseghian has excluded foie gras from her official receptions since taking office in July 2020.
