Interior Ministry Abandons Plans to Dissolve AS Saint-Étienne's Main Fan Clubs

Saint-Étienne – 02.06.2026: The French Interior Ministry has withdrawn its plans to dissolve the two largest fan clubs of the football club AS Saint-Étienne. The groups Magic Fans and Green Angels, which have been known for violent incidents at matches in the past, are allowed to continue to exist for the time being. This decision is based on the recommendation of the National Advisory Commission for the Prevention of Violence at Sports Events, which clearly opposed a dissolution and instead suggested preventive measures as well as intensified dialogue.

AS Saint-Étienne is one of the most traditional football clubs in France and has a lively but also conflict-laden fan culture. The Magic Fans and Green Angels are the most influential supporter groups of the club. There were repeated clashes between them, rival groups, and the police, some of which escalated into violence and worsened the security situation at matches.

Originally, the Interior Ministry intended to enforce the dissolution of these groups in order to curb violence in the stadium and increase the safety of all involved. The Advisory Commission, however, opposed this approach, arguing that dissolving fan clubs does not automatically lead to less violence. Instead, it recommended alternative strategies, including more intensive dialogue among authorities, clubs, and fan groups, and the development of effective preventive security concepts.

During a press conference, the ministry emphasized that measures for public safety are essential, but the role of clubs and their fan culture must also be respected. Unilateral bans could be counterproductive and provoke new tensions. The decision reflects an attempt to balance security with maintaining a lively and violence-free fan culture.

The leadership of AS Saint-Étienne expressed a positive view of this decision and announced that they will now work closely with the fan clubs and security authorities. The goal is to develop an improved security concept that prevents violence in the stadium and promotes dialogue among all parties involved.

The problem of violence surrounding football matches repeatedly poses challenges to security authorities and clubs in France. The newly decided strategy shows that the Interior Ministry is increasingly relying on dialogue and prevention, rather than purely repressive measures. This is intended to lead to a violence-free stadium experience in the long term.

This step underscores a cautious approach to the complex challenges of fan culture in French football. Experts expect that intensified cooperation between fans, clubs, and police will result in sustainable improvements in safety—for the benefit of all football enthusiasts and sporting events.
