From heatwaves to hail: France's climate is going awry

The meteorological summer began in France with a lesson that many experts have been predicting for years: extreme weather conditions are occurring more and more frequently. Just after the country experienced an exceptionally early heatwave at the end of May, at the beginning of June, storms, heavy rains, and locally violent hail showers swept across many regions.

What would have once been considered a rare weather whim is increasingly becoming a new reality. Within a few days, the weather situation shifted from an almost summery warmth to a scenario more reminiscent of the changeable weeks of April. Temperatures dropped sharply, masses of humid air encountered heated ground, and the atmosphere reacted with the explosive dynamics that meteorologists have been observing for years.

This abrupt change is no coincidence. Warmer air can hold much more moisture. When this humid air meets cooler currents, the accumulated energy often releases in the form of severe storms. Large hailstones, violent wind gusts, and sudden local floods are now increasingly part of the French summer landscape.

Agriculture is particularly affected. For winegrowers, fruit growers, and vegetable producers, a hailstorm is like Russian roulette. Months of work can be wiped out in a few minutes. It is especially in the traditional wine-growing regions of France that fear is growing in the face of a development that could make crop losses the rule rather than the exception.

But cities also face new challenges. Pipe systems, designed for different amounts of precipitation, quickly reach their limits during heavy rains. Flooded roads, overflowing underpasses, and damaged infrastructure generate high costs. Added to this is a health burden that is often underestimated. Many people first suffer from extreme heat before quickly facing the consequences of violent weather events.

However, the real core of the problem is deeper. France is not simply experiencing more hot days. The climate is changing the way weather phenomena form and manifest. Transitions become sharper, variations more extreme, and predictability more difficult. What was exceptional yesterday is gradually becoming the norm.

The outlook for the coming months also offers no hope of respite. Meteorologists anticipate temperatures consistently above average, especially in the Mediterranean basin and the alpine regions. The likelihood of another very hot summer is high.

The transition from heatwave to hail may seem contradictory at first glance. In reality, these two phenomena are expressions of the same development. A warmer climate means not only more heat but also more energy in the atmosphere, more moisture in the air, and thus an increased potential for extreme weather events.

France is therefore facing a challenge that goes far beyond simple daily weather forecasting. Climate is increasingly becoming a matter of infrastructure, agriculture, urban planning, and ultimately societal adaptive capacity. The sky above France already provides the clearest indications of this today.
