Fatal Knife Attack on Henry Nowak in the UK Sparks Nationwide Protests

Southampton – 03.06.2026: The murder of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak has sparked protests nationwide in the UK. On June 2nd, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the Southampton police station to protest the circumstances of his death. The protests escalated when some in the crowd threw stones, bricks, and chairs at the police, leading to clashes with the forces. During the clashes, demonstrators repeatedly chanted “Henry, Henry” and demanded justice for the deceased.

Nowak was stabbed to death in Southampton on December 3rd, 2025, by Vickrum Digwa, a 23-year-old member of the Sikh community, with a 21-centimeter ceremonial knife known as a Kirpan. Digwa claimed that Nowak had racially insulted him and stated he had acted in self-defense.

The Hampshire police have come under criticism after bodycam footage became public showing that Nowak was arrested despite obvious injuries. The videos capture Nowak repeatedly saying, “I was stabbed” and “I can’t breathe” while being restrained and handcuffed by officers.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the protesters’ riots as “completely unacceptable.” She emphasized that violence is no answer and warned of a dangerous societal divide. Mahmood appealed to communities to stand together and seek dialogue.

Politicians such as Nigel Farage, chairman of the Reform UK party, responded with sharp criticism of the police. Farage called for “pure cold rage” and accused the authorities of taking the allegations of an alleged racial insult more seriously than the murder itself. Farage’s statements further fueled tensions between political factions and the public.

The family of Vickrum Digwa publicly apologized to Henry Nowak’s relatives and the Sikh community for the consequences of the act. They stressed that their love for their son does not diminish their compassion for Nowak’s loss.

Hampshire police officially apologized for their conduct during the arrest. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the officers to clarify the handling of the incident and the circumstances of Nowak’s death. The public demands a thorough review of police practices and better training in dealing with victims of violent crimes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The protests in Southampton and other UK cities have reignited the debate on racism, police violence, and societal cohesion. Experts view the ongoing societal polarization as a major challenge for the government, which aims for a more factual discussion and intensified integration efforts.
