Israeli Attacks on Southern Lebanon Escalate Despite Ceasefire

Beirut – 06/04/2026: Despite the ceasefire extended on April 17 between Israel and Lebanon, Israeli forces have significantly intensified their attacks on southern Lebanon. Since mid-April, more than 400 people have been killed in the offensive, including numerous civilians. The attacks have recently been expanded to further areas south of Beirut, drastically worsening the situation in the region.

On May 31, 2026, the Israeli army announced the capture of Beaufort Castle, a strategically important fortress last under Israeli control 26 years ago. Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized that the Israeli flag now flies again atop the castle. This success is intended to strengthen Israel’s military position in the border area.

Air and ground troops conducted several attacks in recent days against positions of the Hezbollah militia, which is affiliated with Iran and operates in southern Lebanon. Lebanese authorities reported at least 30 dead and numerous injured in attacks, including on the area around the Karoun Reservoir southeast of Beirut. The destruction of civilian infrastructure is significantly worsening the humanitarian crisis.

The Lebanese government sharply condemned the Israeli attacks. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam described it as a scorched earth tactic aimed at displacing the population from the affected areas. He warned that this approach will neither create security nor end the conflict. The government demands a strict end to the attacks and adherence to the ceasefire.

Despite the violent escalation, Israel and Lebanon continue talks on implementing the ceasefire under US mediation. Another round of negotiations is scheduled for June 2 and 3 in Washington to develop a lasting solution and reduce tensions.

The international community, including the United Nations and the European Union, repeatedly appeals to both sides to stop the violence and continue dialogue. Fear of further conflict expansion increases pressure on the parties involved.

The ongoing hostilities have already caused a severe humanitarian crisis in southern Lebanon. Aid organizations report thousands displaced and acute shortages of water, food, and medical supplies. The unstable situation hampers aid efforts and threatens the safety of civilians.

The situation remains extremely tense and carries the risk of further escalation in an already volatile region. A political solution is considered more urgent than ever to prevent renewed bloodshed and deep destabilization of the Middle East.
