Putin refuses a meeting with Zelensky

Saint Petersburg – 06/05/2026: The Russian president Vladimir Putin has rejected the invitation from his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky for a direct meeting. Zelensky had previously called in an open letter for Putin to agree to a full ceasefire and personal talks in order to end the conflict between the two countries.

At the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin stated that he saw “no interest in a meeting” with Zelensky. He justified this position by explaining that such a conversation could only benefit Ukraine by blocking the advance of Russian forces. At a previous press conference in Moscow, Putin had proposed meeting Zelensky in a third country – but only on the condition that a final peace agreement be negotiated beforehand. Without a concrete agreement, he considers a meeting to be pointless.

The ongoing war causes significant destruction, population displacement, and suffering for thousands of people.
