Putin rejects meeting with Zelensky

Saint Petersburg – 06/05/2026: The Russian president Vladimir Putin has rejected the invitation from his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky for a direct meeting. Zelensky had previously called on Putin in an open letter for a complete ceasefire and personal talks to end the conflict between the two countries.

At the International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg, Putin stated that he “has no interest in a meeting” with Zelensky. He justified this by arguing that a conversation would only benefit Ukraine because it would stop the advance of the Russian armed forces. During an earlier press conference in Moscow, Putin offered to meet Zelensky in a third country – but only on the condition that a definitive peace agreement be negotiated first. Without concrete agreements, he considers a meeting pointless.

This rejection occurs against the backdrop of ongoing military activities. On the night of June 5, 2026, there were again attacks by Russian armed forces in various Ukrainian regions, involving drones and missiles among other weapons. In addition, a drone attack on Romanian territory was reported, further exacerbating the already tense security situation in the region.

Numerous countries and organizations have repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations at the highest political level to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict. At the same time, observers criticize Putin’s refusal to negotiate directly with Zelensky, as this is one of the few opportunities for timely de-escalation and understanding.

Experts emphasize that a personal meeting between the two presidents could help clear up existing misunderstandings and pave the way for lasting peace. However, this requires the political will of both parties to make compromises and actively move toward each other. Without this, the conflict situation remains fragile and still poses a danger to the civilian population in the affected areas.

Alongside diplomatic difficulties, the humanitarian situation in the combat zones is worsening. The ongoing war is causing significant destruction, displacement, and suffering for thousands of people. The international community faces the challenge of promoting both effective peace policy measures and organizing extensive aid for reconstruction and support of those affected.

All in all, the current situation shows that the road to a solution to the conflict is still long. The role of mediators and multilateral forums is becoming increasingly important to restart dialogue between Russia and Ukraine and make stable peace possible.
