Lyhanna Affair: Criticism of Failures in Child Protection after Tragic Case

Paris – 06/08/2026: The tragic death of 11-year-old Lyhanna in the Gers department has sparked an intense debate about failures in child protection in France. Anne-Sophie Mailfert, President of the Fondation des femmes, and Arnaud Gallois, President of Mouv’Enfants, lament a persistent neglect of the issue by political decision-makers. They accuse the authorities of not sufficiently recognizing and combating the reality of violence against children and women.

Former Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin denied responsibility for the lack of resources that contributed to Lyhanna’s death. In his view, it is the responsibility of the relevant local authorities to be equipped, not the central government. Mailfert and Gallois strongly disagree and point to a structural underfunding and lack of political determination in child protection that has existed since the #MeToo movement ten years ago.

As early as August 2025, a complaint had been filed against Jérôme B., the main suspect in the Lyhanna case, for multiple rapes of a ten-year-old friend of his daughter. Despite these allegations, he was never questioned by the investigative authorities, raising serious doubts about the efficiency of the police and judiciary.

The student’s corpse was found in an agricultural facility near Fleurance. Since then, in-depth investigations have been ongoing to clarify the cause of death as well as possible institutional failures. The French judiciary has also launched an administrative investigation to review the procedures on site.

The critics demand not only clarification in this individual case but a fundamental reform of structures to protect children and women. They call for more resources, improved prevention, and a stronger political commitment to victims of violence.

This case exposes weaknesses in the French security and support system and has attracted widespread public attention. Beyond the local impact, political pressure on those responsible is growing to prevent such tragedies in the future and restore confidence in protection mechanisms.

Numerous organizations and citizen initiatives continue to demand further measures to effectively help victims of abuse and advance the examination of institutional failures. The Lyhanna affair marks a turning point in the public discussion about child protection in France and calls on politics to take intensified action.

The coming weeks will show whether the authorities take up the challenges and respond to the demands with concrete reforms. It is clear that the trust of many people in the political system and child protection has been permanently damaged and can only be restored through determined action.
