After Lyhanna’s death, the Speaker of the National Assembly calls to place the “Anti-Gender and Sexual Violence Bill” on the parliamentary agenda

Paris – June 9, 2026: After the tragic death of Lyhanna in Gers, President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet called for the immediate placement of the “Law Against Gender and Sexual Violence” on the parliamentary agenda. This cross-party bill, supported by more than a hundred deputies, aims to take comprehensive measures against gender-based and sexual violence.

Deputy Céline Thiébault-Martinez submitted a draft bill with nearly 80 articles in November 2025 on behalf of a broad parliamentary coalition. The draft is based on 140 recommendations proposed by the “Comprehensive Legislation for Women Alliance” and has received the support of numerous associations.

Braun-Pivet stressed that this issue transcends party lines and is a national priority. She called on the President of the Republic to include the bill on the agenda of a special National Assembly session to be held in July or September.

The bill includes provisions to establish specialized courts for cases of gender-based and sexual violence, introduce an annual confidential conversation starting in kindergarten to identify violence early, and impose bans on professionals convicted of sexual violence from working in roles involving minors.

Braun-Pivet emphasized the urgency of quickly passing the bill to deliver justice for victims and prevent future tragedies. She noted that the fight against gender-based and sexual violence must take place at all levels.

The tragedy surrounding Lyhanna has sparked memorial events nationwide, reigniting public debate in French society about how to address gender-based and sexual violence. Calls for a comprehensive bill reflect a broad social desire to take effective measures to protect women and children from violence.

The upcoming parliamentary session will be crucial in determining whether the bill is passed and which specific measures will be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of France’s women and children.
