Paris – 09.06.2026: Aurore Bergé, Minister for Gender Equality and the Fight Against Discrimination, spoke on June 9, 2026, in the program “Les 4 Vérités” on France 2 about the insufficient support for victims of sexual assault in France. She emphasized that the existing system does not adequately stand by the victims and that urgent measures are necessary to better assist victims and to punish perpetrators more consistently.
Bergé highlighted that despite legal progress, the reality remains difficult for many victims of sexual assault. She criticized the lack of coordination between various institutions and the insufficient awareness in society about this issue. In her view, the judiciary must act more quickly and decisively to do justice to the victims and restore trust in the legal system.
The minister announced that the government would soon present a comprehensive plan aimed at improving support for victims of sexual assault. This plan is to include, among other things, the training of professionals, the improvement of legal procedures, and the provision of additional resources for aid organizations.
Bergé also stressed the importance of prevention and education to raise awareness about sexual assault and to promote a culture of respect. She called on society to actively participate in combating sexual violence and to take responsibility.
In conclusion, the minister emphasized that combating sexual violence is a societal task requiring the cooperation of all stakeholders. Only through joint efforts can an environment be created where victims are protected and perpetrators are held accountable.
Aurore Bergé’s statements have met with broad approval from women’s rights organizations and victim support groups, which have long demanded stronger support for those affected and more consistent prosecution of offenders.
In recent years, France has enacted several legal changes to improve protection for victims of sexual assault. Nevertheless, current statistics show that the number of unreported cases remains high and that many victims continue to be left alone with the consequences of sexual violence.
The government’s planned measures are therefore eagerly awaited to see whether they meet the actual needs of victims and can bring about a sustainable change in the way sexual violence is addressed in France.
