Marseille – 09.06.2026: Israeli director Nadav Lapid has withdrawn from the Festival International de Documentaire (FID) Marseille, which is scheduled to take place from July 7 to 12, 2026. The decision follows boycott calls from several filmmakers who protested his presence and withdrew their participation from the festival.
Lapid, who has lived in France since 2021, is known for his critical stance towards the Israeli government. He was slated to serve on the festival jury and present his latest film “Le Policier” as well as the documentary “Oui” (2025). The latter addresses a nuanced view of Israeli society following the events of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Gaza conflict.
The controversy began when festival participants supporting the cultural boycott against Israel pulled their films from the competition. They justified their protest by refusing to support institutions linked to the Israeli state. Lapid sharply criticized the boycott calls, calling them “cruel” and “perverse.”
Tsveta Dobreva, director of FID Marseille, explained that the boycott actions originated from a group within the festival. Initially, Lapid was invited to participate on the jury, followed by attempts to exclude him from it. Subsequently, both the planned screening of his film and a reading of his book were boycotted. Against this backdrop, Lapid decided to withdraw to avoid further burdening the festival.
FID Marseille expressed regret over the incident and emphasized in a statement that holding individual artists accountable for political decisions of their government is unacceptable. The festival affirmed its commitment to diversity of opinion and highlighted the importance of “hearing and supporting individual voices like Nadav Lapid’s.”
These events spotlight the difficult positions of artists and cultural institutions when they become targets of political disputes within international conflicts. They reveal how closely artistic freedom and political stance are intertwined and how cultural events are increasingly drawn into political debates.
The case also shows how boycott strategies against certain countries or their representatives in the cultural scene can lead to tensions that extend far beyond the medium of film. Many voices warn against the instrumentalization of cultural platforms for political conflicts, as it complicates independent artistic work and hampers dialogue between different perspectives. Despite Lapid’s withdrawal, the topic of cultural freedom and political responsibility remains central in the international cultural debate.
