Death of Noah in Metz: investigations continue into possible homophobic motive

Metz – 09.06.2026: Noahm M., 19 years old from Talange, died on June 2 at Mercy Hospital in Metz. Earlier, there had been a violent brawl on the night of May 29–30, 2026 in Place de la République. Two men, an uncle aged 27 and his 20-year-old nephew, were arrested on June 1 and charged with attempted murder and bodily harm resulting in death. A third suspect, 19 years old, was released after questioning.

Investigations are also focusing on a possible homophobic motive for the act. The Metz public prosecutor, David Touvet, has so far stated that there is no concrete evidence in this regard. At the same time, witness statements report repeated homophobic insults directed at Noahm, including terms such as “pedophile” and “faggot.” The victim is said to have been targeted because of his effeminate appearance and alleged sexual orientation.

On the night of the attack, Noahm, together with his friends, encountered another group of young people who were listening to music. After a brief verbal exchange, the situation quickly escalated into a physical fight. Noahm was struck several times in the head. A 21-year-old cousin of his, who tried to intervene, also suffered facial injuries. Noahm was hospitalized and four days later died from his injuries.

Investigations continue and further elements could lead to an update of the charges. The two main suspects, previously unknown to the authorities, face life imprisonment, depending on the outcome of the trial.

On June 2 about 250 people gathered in Metz for a vigil in memory of Noahm. The associations Couleurs Gaies and Stop Homophobie promoted this protest to demonstrate against violence and discrimination toward the LGBTQIA+ community.

The organization SOS Homophobie strongly condemned the incident, calling it “a double violence” that cannot be tolerated today. It is calling for official recognition of a homophobic motive to do justice to the victim and not to silence victims of LGBTI-phobia.

In an open letter to the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, the La France insoumise parliamentary group called for a minute of silence in honor of Noahm. Deputies stressed that the Republic cannot ignore Noahm’s death and reiterated that homophobia in France remains a lethal threat.

The authorities continue investigations to definitively clarify the circumstances of the attack and the motive, ensuring that all relevant factors are carefully considered to guarantee justice for Noahm.
