Metz – 09.06.2026: Noahm M., 19 years old and originally from Talange, died on June 2 at Mercy Hospital in Metz. Previously, there was a serious confrontation on the night of May 29 to 30, 2026, at Place de la République. Two men, an uncle aged 27 and his nephew aged 20, were arrested on June 1 and charged with attempted murder and bodily injury resulting in death. A third suspect, 19 years old, was released after being questioned.
The investigations focus on a possible homophobic motivation for the act. The Metz prosecutor, David Touvet, has stated so far that there is no concrete evidence in this regard. At the same time, witness testimonies report repeated homophobic insults directed at Noahm, including terms such as “pedophile” and “faggot.” The victim was allegedly attacked specifically because of his effeminate appearance and presumed sexual orientation.
On the night of the attack, Noahm met up with friends with another group of young people who were listening to music. After a brief verbal exchange, the situation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Noahm received multiple blows to the head. His 21-year-old cousin, who tried to intervene, was also injured in the face. Noahm was admitted to the hospital and was found dead from his injuries four days later.
Investigations continue and new findings could modify the charges. The two main suspects, who so far have no criminal records, face a possible life sentence, depending on the outcome of the trial.
On June 2, about 250 people gathered in Metz for a vigil in memory of Noahm. The organizations Couleurs Gaies and Stop Homophobie called for this protest to demonstrate against violence and discrimination towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
The organization SOS Homophobie strongly condemned the act and described it as “a double violence” that must not be tolerated today. It demands official recognition of the homophobic motivation in order to do justice to the victim and prevent victims of phobia against LGBTI people from remaining silent.
In an open letter to the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, the parliamentary group La France insoumise requested a minute of silence in honor of Noahm. The deputies emphasized that the Republic cannot ignore Noahm’s death and stressed again that homophobia remains a mortal danger in France.
The authorities continue investigations to definitively clarify the circumstances of the attack and the motivation. It must be ensured that all relevant factors are thoroughly examined to guarantee justice for Noahm.
