Metz – June 9, 2026: Noam M, a 19-year-old from Thalange, passed away at Mercy Hospital on June 2. Before the incident, there was a violent clash at Republic Square between May 29 and 30, 2026. Two men, 27-year-old uncle and 20-year-old nephew, were arrested on June 1 and charged with attempted murder and causing deadly injury. A third suspect, aged 19, was released after questioning.
The investigation is also focusing on the possibility of homophobic motives. Metz prosecutor David Tuvé stated that there is currently no clear evidence. At the same time, according to witness statements, Noam had repeatedly been subjected to homophobic insults such as “pedophile” and “faggot.” The victim is believed to have been targeted because of a feminine appearance and presumed sexual orientation.
On the night of the attack, Noam encountered another group of young people who were listening to music with friends. After a brief argument, the situation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Noam suffered multiple blows to the head. A 21-year-old cousin who tried to intervene was also injured in the face. Noam was taken to the hospital and died four days later due to the injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and the charges may be revised based on new findings. The two main suspects were not previously known to the police and face possible life imprisonment depending on the outcome of the trial.
On June 2, about 250 people held a gathering in Metz to commemorate Noam. Organized by the Queer Color and Stop Homophobia groups, this protest opposed violence and discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community.
SOS Homophobie strongly condemned this act, calling it a “double violence” and unacceptable. They demand official recognition of homophobic motives, justice for the victim, and urge that other victims suffering from LGBTI-phobia are not forced into silence.
In an open letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, the parliamentary group “La France Insoumise” called for a moment of silence for Noam. The deputies emphasized that the republic cannot ignore Noam’s death and reiterated that homophobia remains a deadly threat in France.
Authorities continue the investigation to definitively clarify the circumstances and motives of the attack. They aim to meticulously examine all relevant elements and ensure justice for Noam.
