Metz – June 9, 2026: Noaem M., a 19-year-old from Talange, died on June 2 at Mercy Hospital. The incident was triggered by a serious clash that took place from the night of May 29 to the early morning of May 30 at the Republic Square. Two men, a 27-year-old uncle and a 20-year-old nephew, were arrested on June 1 and charged with attempted murder and bodily harm causing death. The 19-year-old third suspect was released after investigation.
The investigation is focusing on the possibility of a homophobic motive behind the crime. David Tube, the chief prosecutor of Metz, stated that there is a lack of concrete evidence, but witnesses testified that repeated homophobic insults such as “pedophile” and “gay” were directed at Noaem. The victim appears to have been targeted because of a feminine appearance and presumed sexual orientation.
On the night of the attack, Noaem met with another group of youths who were listening to music with friends, and after a brief argument, it quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Noaem was struck several times on the head, and a 21-year-old cousin who tried to intervene also sustained facial injuries. Noaem was transported to the hospital and was found dead from injuries four days later.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional findings may lead to changes in the charges. The two main suspects currently have no prior police records, and depending on the court’s verdict, they could face life sentences.
On June 2, about 250 people held a memorial rally for Noaem in Metz. The organizations Couleurs Gaies and Stop Homophobie hosted the rally and called for protests against violence and discrimination toward the LGBTQIA+ community.
The SOS Homophobie organization strongly condemned this incident, calling it “double violence,” and emphasized that no tolerance for such acts should be allowed today. They demand official recognition of a homophobic motive for the crime, respect for the victim, and that victims of LGBTI hate should not remain silent.
The La France insoumise group in parliament requested a moment of silence honoring Noaem in an open letter to Yael Braun-Pivet, the Speaker of the National Assembly. The deputies stressed that the Republic cannot ignore Noaem’s death and once again pointed out that homophobia remains a deadly threat in France.
The authorities continue to investigate in order to definitively clarify the circumstances and motives of the attack. All relevant factors will be thoroughly reviewed to ensure justice for Noaem.
