Donald Trump transforms the White House into an MMA arena

Washington, D.C. – 06/09/2026: On the occasion of Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the United States, a Mixed Martial Arts event (MMA) is scheduled for June 14, 2026, at the White House. President Trump is having a temporary arena installed on the South Lawn for this purpose, a decision that has met with fierce criticism in politics and public opinion.

The event is called UFC Freedom 250 and is organized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Six fights are planned, including a heavyweight title fight between the Frenchman Ciryl Gane and the Brazilian Alex Pereira. The arena is expected to accommodate about 5,000 spectators, while approximately 85,000 visitors are expected in the adjacent park, The Ellipse.

The costs for the MMA event are estimated at 60 million US dollars. The White House Communications Agency emphasizes that the financing is fully covered by the UFC; no public funds are being used.

Despite this financing, the plan meets with widespread disapproval. A survey by the YouGov institute shows that only 17 percent of respondents support the event, while 51 percent are against it. The disapproval is particularly pronounced among political independents at 55 percent.

Furthermore, legal action has been taken: plaintiffs have filed a lawsuit to prevent the event. They argue that a sporting event on federal park grounds, such as the South Lawn, violates the rules of the National Park Service.

In response, the White House Communications Agency states that the event is a historic celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States and complies with the regulations of the National Park Service.

The event is being organized by UFC president Dana White, who expects attendance comparable to that of the Super Bowl. However, the broadcast of the event will only be available via the streaming service Paramount+, which limits broad accessibility.

The decision to hold an MMA event at the White House reflects Trump’s long-standing enthusiasm for combat sports. At the same time, it has reignited the debate about the mixing of politics and entertainment and caused controversial discussions.

Given the upcoming presidential elections in the US that same year, the controversial plan could also have political symbolism. Critics see it as a spectacle meant to distract from urgent political issues. Supporters, on the other hand, emphasize the entertainment value and the special platform the White House provides to celebrate American culture.

The coming weeks will reveal whether the MMA event at the White House can actually take place and what impact it will have on Trump’s political position and public perception.
