Lyhanna Affair: President of the National Assembly Condemns Accusations Against Judges as a “Serious Mistake”

Fleurance – 09.06.2026: The murder of eleven-year-old Lyhanna from Fleurance in southwestern France has sparked nationwide outrage. In more than 150 cities, thousands of people gathered in front of courthouses to protest perceived failings within the justice system. In light of the public indignation, Yaël Braun-Pivet, President of the National Assembly, warned against blanket accusations against judges and called criticism of the judiciary a “serious mistake.” She emphasized the indispensable independence of the judiciary and pointed out that premature blame harms the legal system.

At the center of the case is Jérôme Barella, 41 years old, the father of one of Lyhanna’s classmates. He faces serious allegations of sexual abuse of minors. Although he had been accused multiple times of violence against children prior to the murder, no interrogations or arrest warrants were issued. Only after Lyhanna’s body was found was he arrested and charged with several cases of sexual abuse of minors.

In response to public outrage, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that all ongoing cases involving child sexual abuse would undergo a comprehensive review. Approximately 70,000 cases could be reevaluated by July 14 to identify and correct possible failures.

Furthermore, a joint inspection mission involving representatives from the judiciary, the gendarmerie, and the Ministry of Education has been initiated. The goal is to examine how proceedings related to this and similar cases are handled. Initial results of the investigation are expected by June 19.

The Conseil supérieur de la magistrature (CSM) emphasized the importance of judicial independence and criticized the instrumentalization of the case by individuals who hold judges responsible for the tragic event. The CSM also pointed out that disciplinary measures against judges for misconduct are customary and praised the judiciary’s sustained performance despite limited resources.

The public debate is now increasingly focused on the efficiency of the justice system and on how to reduce the workload of prosecutors and expand the judiciary’s financial resources. Politicians, experts, and activists are urgently calling for reforms to restore public trust in the justice system and prevent future negligence.

Overall, the French justice system is under intense pressure following the Lyhanna case. The coming weeks will show whether the announced measures bring concrete improvements and can strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.
