Pope Leo XIV Visits France: Focus on Paris, Lourdes, and Metz

The preparations for Pope Leo XIV’s visit to France are becoming increasingly concrete. From September 25 to 28, 2026, the highest leader of the Catholic Church will visit several major locations within France and meet thousands of believers as well as many political and social leaders. For the Catholic Church in France, this visit is already considered one of the most important religious events of recent years.

The beginning will take place in Paris. Leo XIV will stay in Paris on September 25 and 26. The central events include several celebrations, including Vespers at the restored Notre-Dame Cathedral. The Pope’s visit to this symbolic place holds special significance. Since the devastating fire in 2019, Notre-Dame has come to be regarded today as a symbol of renewal and hope.

As part of the liturgical events, a meeting with young people is also planned. The Church has focused on dialogue with the younger generation for years. The large open-air Mass in the French capital is expected to be the highlight of the Paris visit and will attract many pilgrims from home and abroad.

On September 27, there will be a move to Lourdes. This pilgrimage site located in the Pyrenees is one of the most famous Catholic pilgrimage destinations worldwide. Every year, millions visit expecting comfort, healing, or spiritual guidance. The Pope’s visit adds a special significance to this place. A Mass offered at the Lourdes sanctuary will be an emotional moment for many believers.

The conclusion of the visit to France is the city visit to Metz on September 28. This schedule was considered a long-time surprise announcement since the previous plan only included Paris and Lourdes. At the magnificent Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, the Pope will celebrate a solemn Mass. The addition of the Metz visit reflects the intention to cover multiple regions in France and show closeness to the local faithful.

This visit also carries personal meaning. Pope Leo XIV, whose real name is Robert Prévost, has family roots in France. Because of this, the trip holds symbolic significance beyond a mere church event.

There is also a political agenda included. A UNESCO visit in Paris and a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron are planned, making the day’s schedule encompass religious, cultural, and diplomatic aspects.

4 days, 3 cities, and countless meetings: France is preparing for the papal visit, which is significant not only to Catholics. Excitement is already building up locally in anticipation of this special event.
