It is the first breath of cold mountain air that catapults you into the heart of winter. Annecy, this charming town in the French Alps, is a jewel all year round – but during the Christmas season it becomes the setting of an enchanted winter fairytale. Here, among snowy peaks and the crystal-clear lake, you will find a Christmas market that is both cozy and spectacular.
Arrival in the “Pearl of the Alps”
Already the journey to Annecy is an experience. Whether you arrive by car through snowy alpine roads or by train, winding gently through the mountains – the anticipation grows with every kilometer. As soon as you reach the historic center, you are welcomed by a sea of lights. The buildings, whose colorful façades look like they came out of a fairytale, are decorated with strings of lights that reflect in the water of the canals.
A first stroll through the narrow streets gives the feeling of stepping into a postcard. In the air you can smell cinnamon, cloves, and freshly made crêpes, while in the distance the sweet melodies of Christmas music can be heard.
A visit to the Christmas market
The Annecy Christmas market spreads out across several squares and streets in the heart of the historic center. It begins at Place François de Menthon, where a small but beautiful ice-skating rink is set up. Children happily skate around while parents sip a glass of mulled wine on the sidelines – the perfect start to a winter afternoon.
From here the path leads directly to the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, the central square of the Christmas market. The stalls are artistically decorated, the roofs covered with a layer of artificial snow. Here you can find everything: from handmade Christmas decorations to regional specialty products, as well as warm wool scarves and hats. One stall immediately catches my attention – it offers traditional Savoyard ceramics with delicate snowflake patterns.
Culinary specialties – Pleasures in the Alps
Wherever you are in Annecy, food always plays a major role. At the Christmas market, traditional Alpine cuisine and festive delicacies combine into an irresistible mix.
An absolute must? Tartiflette! This hearty casserole of potatoes, bacon, and creamy Reblochon cheese is freshly prepared at various stalls. Just the aroma makes your mouth water, and the taste – simply divine. This pairs perfectly with a glass of hot cider, which quickly makes you forget the cold.
Sweets are not missing either: at the stall of an elderly couple, I try the Bugnes, a type of fritter dusted with powdered sugar. Accompanied by a freshly brewed coffee – you are ready for another round around the city.
A visit to Lake Annecy
No visit to Annecy would be complete without a look at the lake. Just a few minutes’ walk from the Christmas market, a view opens up that leaves you speechless: the Lac d’Annecy sparkles like a bright mirror, framed by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps.
Here, on the shore, another small part of the Christmas market is set up. The atmosphere is calmer, almost meditative. One stall sells hand-carved nativity figurines, while another offers hot roasted chestnuts. It is the perfect place to stop for a moment and let yourself be enveloped by the enchanted atmosphere.
Cultural highlights and traditions
Annecy is not only famous for its market but also for its history full of traditions. A brief visit to the Church of Saint Maurice is a welcome opportunity to warm up while admiring the splendid Christmas decorations.
The people of Annecy are proud of their traditions, and this is especially evident in the “Santons” – small hand-painted nativity figurines often inspired by local trades. At Monsieur Dupont’s stall, I discovered that each figure tells a story: the peasant woman with her basket full of apples, the fisherman with his net – it is a tribute to the region and its people.
A magical evening
As soon as night falls, the Christmas atmosphere in Annecy reaches its peak. The market lights shine more intensely and the old town is illuminated by a warm golden glow.
On the way back to the Hôtel de Ville, I treat myself to a portion of raclette – melted cheese scraped directly from the wheel and poured over potatoes and bread. A feast that perfectly concludes the evening.
To conclude, I let myself be enchanted by the „Déambulation des Lumières“, a show of lights and music. The facades of the old town transform into a screen on which snowflakes dance and Christmas stories are told.
Why Annecy is so special during the Christmas season
What makes Annecy so unique? Is it the sparkling lake, the backdrop of the Alps, or the authentic charm of the town? Probably a combination of all this. Here time seems to stand still while you indulge in the small joys of life – a piece of cheese, a warm cup of mulled wine, a friendly chat with one of the street vendors.
And in the end, a question remains in the heart: why don’t people come here more often? Annecy during Advent is like a lovingly wrapped gift, that you want to unwrap again every year.
