Yannick Barella Charged After Serious Accusations – New Twist in the Lyhanna Case

The Lyhanna case continues to bring new legal developments. Yannick Barella, the brother of Jérôme Barella, who is considered the main suspect in connection with the disappearance and death of young Lyhanna in the Gers department, is now himself in the judicial spotlight. He is under investigation for several serious allegations made by two former partners.

According to the public prosecutor’s office in Auch, Yannick Barella was questioned as part of an investigation into alleged crimes spanning approximately ten years. The allegations include rape of a minor over 15 years old, rape within a partnership, as well as unlawful restraint and repeated death threats against a partner.

Central to the investigation is the testimony of a former partner. She describes having been repeatedly subjected to sexual violence during their relationship. According to available information, she was 17 years old at the time of the first alleged incidents. Remarkably, the criminal complaint was filed as early as 2024, long before the Lyhanna affair made national headlines and brought the Barella family into the public eye.

Investigators also examined another matter dating back to 2018. This involves information from a second former partner. The authorities have not publicly disclosed details of this case. However, its existence apparently played a role in the decision to reopen and intensify investigations against Yannick Barella.

After the police custody period expired, the responsible investigative judges decided to formally charge Yannick Barella. Such a charge, under the French legal system, means that the judiciary believes there is sufficient incriminating evidence to continue the investigation. At the same time, the presumption of innocence still applies. Whether the allegations hold true remains to be clarified by the ongoing investigation. Only a possible trial could ultimately decide criminal liability.

This new development comes at a time of heightened public attention. Since the discovery of Lyhanna’s body and the indictment of Jérôme Barella for kidnapping, unlawful restraint, and murder of a minor, numerous questions have occupied the French public. These also include earlier reports and leads concerning several individuals within the family circle.

Political representatives are now calling for a comprehensive review of older cases, especially where minors were involved. The debate centers on whether earlier warning signs were taken seriously enough or if there were failings within the responsible authorities.

For the investigative authorities, a new and crucial phase is beginning. The investigative judges must carefully evaluate testimonies, evidence, and findings to date. Only then can it be determined whether the allegations will hold up in court.
