The legal affair involving the French singer and actor Patrick Bruel has taken a new and significant turn. After two days of police custody at the Paris Criminal Police, the 67-year-old artist was officially charged by investigative judges in Nanterre. The allegations are severe: rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. Subsequently, the judiciary ordered judicial supervision and released the musician from custody.
Notably, the public prosecutor initially requested pre-trial detention. However, after presentation before the investigative judges and the competent detention judge, the court did not follow this request. Thus, Patrick Bruel remains free during the ongoing investigations but must comply with the conditions of judicial supervision.
The case centers on alleged acts that are said to have occurred between 2010 and 2019. According to investigative authorities, the allegations involve nine women. The alleged offenses reportedly took place not only in France but also in Belgium and Switzerland. The international dimension of the case adds further complexity to the investigations.
However, the matter does not end there. Investigators have also included thirteen additional proceedings in the file. These concern allegations, some dating back to the 1990s. Many of these matters are legally considered time-barred. Nevertheless, the investigative judges want to gain as complete a picture as possible of the accusations against the artist. While older statements may not necessarily lead to prosecution, they provide investigators with important clues for the overall assessment of the case.
In recent months, the investigation has significantly expanded. Several women have filed complaints or joined the proceedings as civil parties. In addition, numerous further statements and tips have been received by the authorities. Not every tip meets the criteria for criminal proceedings, but the volume of reports shows the scale the affair has now reached.
Patrick Bruel firmly denies all allegations. His lawyers emphasize that their client is fully cooperating with the investigative authorities and is determined to prove his innocence. For the popular singer, who has been one of the most well-known personalities in the French entertainment industry for decades, the proceedings represent a significant burden.
However, the recent indictment does not yet mean conviction. In the French legal system, a “mise en examen” indicates that the judges see sufficient incriminating evidence to continue the investigations in a formal investigative procedure. In the coming months, further interrogations, confrontations, and expert reports are likely to follow. Only then will it be decided whether the case will go to trial or be dismissed.
